In the writings of the Arizal, two general reasons are given for the creation of the world: "that the perfection of His abilities be revealed" and "that His greatness be recognized." These two reasons stem from two aspects and descriptions of the Divine light—infinite (bli-gvul) and unbounded by limitation (bli-geder). From these perspectives, creation holds a certain value and significance, as it fulfills the purpose of creation. However, from the words of the Alter Rebbe, it becomes clear that creation is not due to any reason or virtue but only because Hashem "desired" (deeply needed) it. From this lofty aspect, creation has no intrinsic value; its entire purpose is merely to fulfill the ultimate intention.
A. It is well-known that the Alter Rebbe stated[1], based on the words of the Midrash[2], that the ultimate purpose of the creation of the world is because "Hashem desired to have a dwelling place in the lower realms." The purpose of the creation of this physical world, and the chain of descent of all the worlds, is that this lowest world should become a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He—a place where Hashem, in His entirety, is revealed.
The Alter Rebbe explains[3] that from the precise wording, "Hashem desired," we learn that just as desire in a person is not based on reason or intellect, or the merits of the thing one desires, but only because the person desires it and his soul longs for it, so too, the creation of the worlds stems from Hashem's "desire," which transcends reason and understanding.
However, in the writings of the Arizal, we find two reasons and explanations for the creation of the world. In one place[4], it is stated that the purpose of creation is "that the perfection of His abilities be revealed"—that the aspect of Divinity should become known. In the words of the Zohar[5], "so that they may know Him." This is one purpose. In another place in the writings of the Arizal[6], another purpose for the existence of the worlds is explained: that the creations "recognize His greatness." Not only that the aspect of Divinity becomes known, but that the creations recognize it.
In the previous issue, we addressed this central topic and explained that these three purposes ("Hashem desired to have a dwelling place in the lower realms," "that the perfection of His abilities be revealed," and "that they recognize His greatness") stem from three different levels in Divinity. Furthermore, it was explained that since the purpose of creation is realized through the study of Torah and the fulfillment of the commandments given at Sinai, it must be that at the Giving of the Torah, these purposes began to be fulfilled. As explained in the Midrash[7], at the Giving of the Torah began the process of "the higher realms descending to the lower realms"—the revelation of Divine powers below. Likewise, at that time, the ability for the second stage was granted: that the lower realms ascend to the higher realms—the recognition of the lower creations in the greatness of Divinity. Additionally, at the Giving of the Torah, the aspect of "Anochi" ("I am"), Hashem’s essence, which is beyond all descriptions, was revealed—an aspect connected to the idea of "Hashem desired."
In that issue, we focused primarily on explaining the first concept—the revelation of the perfection of His abilities through the descent of higher powers and their manifestation below. Now, we will address the explanation of the second and third concepts, beginning with the second and then proceeding to the third.
Just as in explaining the first concept, the descent of the higher realms into the lower realms, there are three components:
